Barbara I think most of Barbara’s friends would agree that she drove us all round the bend. She had no sense of time and became alive as the sun was setting. Barbara’s enthusiasm for life and people was what drew us to her. Barbara lived up the road from us and she would often pop in with a chicken or some chops which Pete would cook up and then we would settle into an evening of Canasta or Scrabble. She loved words and this was the main way we stayed in touch with over a dozen simultaneous games on the go. And books. She introduced me to the musical writing of Laurie Lee. When I visited her we had a wonderful day poking around the town of his birth. She loved ferreting for books to bring when she came out to visit. Another thing she loved was bargains. When I stayed with her we would go to the shops late afternoon and hunt for our supper in ‘best before’ bins. In Zim she had a passion for cooked chocolate puddings. One thing that drove us nuts about her was how long she took to eat. And she would say we didn’t know how to enjoy the food we wolfed down. Barbara never turn down a cup of coffee saying the last time she did she nearly died from an ectopic pregnancy. And she would always drink her coffee with the spoon it it. Not sure why Di Charsley
